Hello, I’m Tricia Johnson — British Sign Language Tutor

I’m an experienced teacher, creative practitioner, and qualified BSL tutor with a deep love for communication and inclusive learning.

Now based in West Somerset, I continue to offer online and in-person British Sign Language tuition.

A Bit About My Background

I began teaching in 2001 and have worked across adult education, universities, community groups, and private courses. I hold a range of teaching and BSL qualifications, including NVQ Level 3, BSL Level 6 training, and Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. I’ve taught Introduction to BSL, Signature-accredited Level 1 and 2, and bespoke sessions for adults with learning difficulties, families, and children from age 7 upwards.

Over the years I’ve worked as a Communication Support Worker (CSW), BSL tutor, and Deaf Awareness trainer with organisations including Northbrook College, Chichester University, Aspire Sussex, and corporate clients like GSK (GlaxoSmithKline), DMH Stallard, and Horizon Leisure Centres.

I also ran a Communication Club in West Sussex for six years, which offered community connection through tuition, practice groups, and social events, such as talks and signed karaoke, for Deaf, Hearing and hard of hearing people.

Teaching Style

I love to teach and am happy to teach students of all ages. I believe learning should be enjoyable, encouraging, and tailored to your pace and interests. My BSL lessons, both online and in person, offer plenty of opportunities for interaction and real-life practice. I support learners at any stage, from absolute beginners to those preparing for exams or moving onwards.

For businesses and groups, I deliver Deaf Awareness Training with a strong focus on offering inclusive service and practical communication skills. Sessions can be adapted to your team’s needs and always include a warm welcome, real-life context, and a touch of humour!
